Located in the Centre of Rome, near the Teatro Argentina, the Burcardo Library and Theatre Collection (an office of the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers - SIAE) was formally established in 1932.

The reading room is open Monday through Friday, from 9.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. The reading room is closed on weekends, on holidays and in August.
The materials are non-circulating. Staff members are available to assist users in their research, especially when dealing with non-book or rare archival materials.
Within copyright restrictions, a photocopy service is available. A photographic service is provided for rare and fragile materials.

Activities

The activities of the Burcardo Library and Theatre collection are mainly directed to preserving, cataloguing and making all the collections available to the public. Users are supplied with new instruments in order to make their research easier. Though technology entered the library relatively late, it has already allowed to carry out some important projects.
Two catalogues were published:
I libretti per musica della Biblioteca del Burcardo, by Giovanna Aloisi, Stefania Cuffaro, Maria Teresa Iovinelli (SIAE - Biblioteca e Raccolta Teatrale, 1993). With index of dramatists, composers, choreographers, singers, dancers, musicians, set and costume designers, theatres and chronological index of performances. 445 pages.
Le edizioni cinquecentine della Biblioteca del Burcardo, by Giovanna Aloisi, Stefania Cuffaro, Maria Teresa Iovinelli (SIAE - Biblioteca e Raccolta Teatrale, 1995). With an appendix: Marche degli editori e degli stampatori. 108 pages.

After the reopening of the museum, the organisation of new exhibitions has become another important activity. The Burcardo Theatre Collection devoted its latest exhibition to Ettore Petrolini, in Spring-Summer 2003. During the last years, however, materials from the collections were lended for many exhibitions, in Italy and abroad.

The Burcardo Library and Theatre Collection is an active member of the International Association of Libraries and Museums of the Performing Arts (SIBMAS).
