THE MUSEUM
The Burcardo Museum has been completely renewed during the latest
restoration, ended in 1998. The new museum inevitably struck the visitors who came back to
after ten years, and could hardly recognise the rooms. Those who had appreciated the old
fashioned glamour of the dark rooms furnished with heavy wooden showcases, were pleasantly
surprised by the renovation.
The restoration of the museum needed a difficult, delicate project
work. The building itself, so rich in cultural and historical values, asked for a
respectful and careful attitude. Therefore, the museum was designed to minimize the visual
impact with the context of the historical building, which should remain the main
attraction.
We tried to reproduce a "theatrical" surround where costumes, objects, set
designs, photos recall each other, as components of the same unique event: the theatre
performance. For this reason, the showcases were designed to allow an interaction between
the visitor and the object: costumes, for instance, have been put on dummies to bring them
back to their real proportions, and placed into glass showcases in the middle of the room:
the visitor can turn them round, threading wooden platforms which recall the stage where
these costumes had their moment of glory, wore by celebrated actors.
The showcases were designed in a modern, essential and functional style, with no mimetic
intention towards the context, though this synthetic design has a close relationship with
the rigorous gothic style of Burcardo's house. The materials for the showcases have been
chosen with reference to the other materials of the building: the grey finish of the metal
frames evokes the leaden sealing of the glass windows, and glass has often been used
directly upon the peperino of door-frames and niches, to emphasise the materiality of the
stone by its transparency.
The arrangement was conceived in accordance with a principle of flexibility, therefore the
showcases are mostly provided with wheels, and can be moved to new configurations.
Mechanical devices allow us to change the angle of the planes for different types of
exhibition.
Light was given a very important role, to stress the suggestiveness of the theatre
exhibition. The direction and intensity of the beams is intended to enhance the
theatricality of the objects, as though they were all actors of the same performance.
The lightning system is made of optical fibres, offering a very good colour quality and a
total protection against thermic and ultraviolet rays, dangerous for materials of such an
artistic and historical value
