THE MUSEUM

Permanent Exhibition

The permanent exhibition designed after the reopening of the museum is an anthological presentation of the Burcardo collections. The exhibition spaces, in fact, are too small to exhibit the whole collections properly. Therefore, the museum was thought as a place where temporary exhibitions will present documents and objects related to a personality, a period or a particular aspect of theatre and performing arts.
The Burcardo Library owns collections of great artistic and historical value, which are not supposed to stay locked into drawers. During the last years, researchers have always had free access to the collections, but the increasing demand of fruition from the largest audience that presently crowds museums and galleries cannot be ignored. The idea of museum has changed; museums are more and more living institutions producing cultural events, rather than showcases for precious memories of the past. Visitors now ask for new initiatives related to the exhibitions, like seminars, conferences, educational programmes, readings, performances and concerts.
With this permanent exhibition, the Burcardo tries to attract an audience larger than the public made of theatre lovers, who already know and appreciate its collections. We try to show some examples of the fine and meaningful documents that have accompanied and illustrated theatre performances for centuries, and have then become sources of inspiration for high-level artists. Visitors will look at the documents from different point of views, connecting their own experiences to the artistic suggestiveness of the past, for a better understanding of performing arts as a living matter, always renewing it, though feeding into its millennial history.
